trompe l'oeil outdoors - expanding your horizons This is an open-sided summer house
on the Kent and Sussex border. A stand of mature trees obscures the owner's view of one of the prettiest areas of Britain, so they decided to commission their ideal idyll to be painted on the summer house wall. The only constraints were that the vista had to cover the whole wall for optimum effect; that there should be a picturesque village with church, cricket ground and river; and that the scene should 'feel welcoming'. This was achieved by painting an open gate with a path that leads the eye into the scene, but that also can be followed down the hill, turning into a towpath and then entering the village itself. The MDF wall is
open to the elements, and a sugar soap and detergent solution was used to clean the area and kill off any growth or mildew before painting. A sealant was used solely to protect both sides of the MDF wall surface, as the
acrylic paint used by eyebright will put up with any form of weather (heat, cold, direct UV light, driving rain and persistant damp) completely unprotected. |
